The Incredible History!

Did you know? In January 1865, Union General William T. Sherman issued Special Field Order No. 15, which set aside 400,000 acres of coastal land in Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida for newly freed Black families. Each family would receive up to 40 acres—a rare moment when the U.S. government acknowledged that freedom without land meant very little. The order came after a meeting with 20 Black ministers and leaders in Savannah, who made it clear that land ownership was key to building real independence.

That promise was short-lived. After Lincoln’s assassination, President Andrew Johnson reversed the order and gave the land back to former Confederates—men who had literally gone to war to keep slavery alive. The idea of lasting reparations through land was shut down before it ever got started. Special Field Order No. 15 remains one of the clearest examples of how efforts to repair the damage of slavery were blocked almost as soon as they began. That broken promise still echoes today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you Black-owned?

Yes. And it's great that you asked! TheBlackest Co. is proudly Black-owned and certified by the U.S. Black Chambers, Inc.

How long does shipping take?

Most orders are produced and ship out in 2–4 business days and take another 4–6 days to arrive (often sooner). Every item is made to order, which takes a little extra time, but ensures quality, reduces waste, and saves water.

How do I know what size?

Measure something you already own and love the fit of, then compare to our size chart on each product page. Our shirts generally run true to size — if you're between sizes or prefer a looser fit, sizing up is usually the way to go.

Can I use discount codes with...?

Good news — a lot of our codes do stack! We have so many running at once that the easiest way to know is to add them at checkout and see what happens. If it works, you'll see it. If not, no worries — the best deal will still always apply!

Is this made to order?

Yup - just like a birthday cake! Every item is made to order, which takes a little extra time, but ensures quality, reduces waste, and saves water.

What's your return policy?

If there's ever a workmanship issue — like a misprint, wrong size sent, or anything defective — we'll make it right, free of charge, ASAP. Email us with clear photos and your order number.

Because each item is made to order, we're not able to accept returns or exchanges for size or color choices...or life's regrets. We don't carry inventory to swap out and we don't resell returns.

There's a typo

There's a typo. The word "order" is singular. The was only one Special Order 15.
Let me know if you if you fix that. I'll buy another one.

It’s important to get these historical facts, especially around topics like Reconstruction, accurate and clear. Thank you for sharing your feedback. I wanted to clarify the title since it’s an important detail.

The correct name is actually Special Field Orders No. 15 - plural “Orders.” This was the official heading Sherman used when he issued a whole series of orders in January 1865. No. 15 was the specific one that set aside land for formerly enslaved families, which people often summarize as “forty acres and a mule.”

You’ll see it listed this way in the National Archives and most academic references. Using Special Field Orders No. 15 is the historically accurate way to cite this pivotal document. We appreciate you taking the time to look closely at the details and thank you for your purchase.

  • A Culture Vulture Free Zone

Look, we're all for inclusion and the diverse celebration of Black History. However, it has become increasingly common for NON Black-owned companies to sell Black Culture while also falsely claiming to be Black-owned. This practice of cultural appropriation is not only dishonest but also disrespectful to the Black community. By profiting off of Black culture without actually supporting or empowering Black-owned businesses, these companies perpetuate systemic inequality and contribute to the erasure of Black voices and perspectives. It is important for consumers to do their research and support authentic Black-owned businesses that prioritize social justice, equity, and circulation of the Black dollar; rather than those that simply capitalize on the latest cultural trends.
